Some Recognition I Guess Were Doing Alright I was honored to make the top 11 (not the top 10) in the Top HR Digital Influencers 2009 list. The list of bloggers here is really fantastic, and its flattering to be on here.  This list is based on certain levels of traffic and links and stuff like that (quantifiable stuff), not necessarily quality of content or even whether they are active bloggers anymore (Joel Cheesman is ranked at #3 but discontinued his usually-number-one blog back in September). Its really cool to see relatively-newcomer Mark Stelzner on this list, and its even more cool to see hes at #1.  Mark has done a fantastic job as the founder (cofounder?) of Job Angels. Launce Haun has always been awesome  and well-respected, as have Jessica Lee (met her in person!) and  Kris Dunn. Im surprised to have gotten a better ranking than Laurie Ruettimann (what a punk she is!) and Jason Davis, as both of them have been a big part of RecruitingBlogs.com, which is one of the best-run Ning sites Ive ever seen. Its an honor to rank higher than Bill Vick, recruiting genius, and Peter Clayton, the mastermind behind Total Picture Radio, even though I think they are way better than I am. There are a few names I dont recognize, but Ill get familiar with them in a bit. If you are interested in jobs, job creation, employment, recruiting, the job search and hiring issues, theres a great list of blogs to follow. I do wonder (so does Laurie R.) why some other terrific advisors are not on this list I mentioned the writers at Career Hub recently, and I never see Nick Crocodilos (brilliant information) on any of these lists, although he should be.  And it will be interesting to see my competition and other job seeker software vendors get on these lists next year (hopefully), as many of the resume writers and career coaches who have started blogging in the last year or two.  Oi vey, where are the outplacement firm blogs? Why Its Important to Inject Your Personality into Your Resume If there is no ?U? in your res?u?me, then it isn?t fit for purpose. Since computers were invented, the advice regarding resume/CV  writing has been ?keep it simple?, on two or  three sides of A4 on plain paper and no fancy fonts. However, there are an increasing number of digital  formats emerging which allow you to present yourself in new and interesting  ways so times may be slowly changing. Infographics, digital presentations (Slideshare, Prezi), personal websites and videos can all  help you demonstrate your skills and experience in a more visually stimulating  manner which may, in turn, help you stand out from the crowd when applying for  a position. But whatever the format you  choose, whether it a simple piece of paper or a full scale video shoot, the most  important factor is you. If a recruiter or employer doesn?t get a feel for you  as a person whilst reviewing your application, then it isn?t worth the paper or  online platform it is written on. Where?s the evidence? One of the biggest mistakes people make when writing a  resume is not providing any evidence. They make general statements such as ?I?m an  effective communicator,? or ?I increased sales by 25%?, but anyone can state  these things, the most important thing is the proof. A recruiter or a potential  employer want to know how you personally achieved or demonstrated what you are  claiming. How have you exhibited  effective communication skills in previous roles? What strategies did you put  in place to allow you to improve sales by a quarter?Was the sales increase  across the board, or is this something only you achieved within the sales team? Simply cramming your resume with keywords that appear in the  advert or job description isn?t going to impress anyone. If you can?t back up  your statements with hard facts, your case for been a suitable candidate will  be withdrawn due to lack of evidence. Say ?cheese?: The question of whether or not you should put a photograph  on your resume is up there with ?which came first the chicken or the egg?? I know some recruitment consultants who get a  shiver down their spine when they see someone?s mug shot peering back at them  from the page, but with images prevalent within online profiles, emails and  websites, the continuing increase of profile pictures on CVs is inevitable. Recruiters  increasingly want to see who they are dealing with and if a picture isn?t  provided, they will go online and take a look at you anyway. If you are going to add a photograph to a CV, then the same  rules apply as with LinkedIn. Make sure it is a straight forward, colour headshot. Soft focus arty shots, action  shots or a picture of your favourite pet are unlikely to gain you any favours  with a potential employee. And make sure your picture is the same across all  your platforms (i.e. CV, website, email, Twitter, LinkedIn etc), as image consistency will help to strengthen your personal brand. Spare time? In today?s competitive 24 hour, 7 days a week environment,  in some circles it may be seen as a negative to actually admit to having any spare  time, but for companies who care about their employees a certain amount of  downtime is acceptable. But again, there is always the question of should you  include your outside interests on your CV? This question becomes more pertinent  the more senior and experienced you get as it seems increasingly less relevant in  the grand scheme of things and there is less need to include your interests and  hobbies to simply bulk up your resume/CV. However, there is also an increasing importance towards  company culture. Skills and experience are not the only factors that are taken  into consideration when applying for a role. It is important to demonstrate  your personality, as employers are more likely to take on like-minded people and  interests and hobbies play apart in this. But there is a balance. If your  resume consists of a paragraph or two of your relevant information and then 2  pages of your achievements as a singer in a local rock band, it is going to be  obvious where your passion lies. Which platform?  If you are considering using a more modern way of presenting  yourself such as video or Slideshare then take into  account the type of company you are applying to. If it is within the creative  industry, then they will probably appreciate a more imaginative approach, whereas an accountancy firm is likely to be more traditional. A company website should give you some  indication of whether a company is more conventional or embrace modern digital  media.  If you are unsure then provide both a standard CV and the new format. This  will give the recruiter/employer the option of reviewing your skills and  experience in the format they feel most comfortable with. Pick up the phone.  One thing that is even more effective than trying to display  your personality through your resume or CV, is by demonstrating it in real life.  By ringing the recruiter or employer and speaking to them directly, it will not  only give you the opportunity to show the real you, but it will also make you  more memorable in the process than a video or a bit of paper and allows you to  demonstrate that you have initiative. Once it?s time to short-list for  interview your name will already stick out, which will increase your chances significantly  of going through. Get out of thinking loops Are you stuck in a form of thinking loop?  The best example of a thinking loop is when you lose your keys. Many people return more than twice to the same spot because they are sure that is where they left their keys. A thinking loop is very similar. It is where you keep buzzing the same ideas around your mind to the point where you cannot think of new ideas. Getting yourself out of this cycle involves analyzing the reasons why your current ideas will not work, and then concentrating your future ideas on fixing the reasons why your current ideas will not work. This will help guide you out of your loop. The other option is to take your mind off the subject and try again later. 2. Take vegetarian omega 3 pills This tip is not a joke or an urban legend. For some reason, a person that is suffering with repetitive writer’s block or idea’s block should start taking one vegetarian omega 3 pill with their evening tea. Just one per day is fine, and it has to be the vegetarian kind. You shouldn’t take them at the same time as any other medication because they stop it from working. For some reason (there are probably plenty of scientific ones), you will be able to come up with more ideas very easily after about a week of taking the pills. Just try it before you complain that it “cannot” help. 3. Be negative (no, really!) Many people get stuck trying to think of ways to improve something. They hit a wall and do not know where to turn. One option is to take a form of negative bias. Instead of thinking of ways you may make something better, think of ways you could make it worse, and then consider how you would stop things getting worse. As you think up new ways to stop your “thing” from getting worse, you often find ways of making it better (which was your original intention). 4. Set up a structure for your creative  process Some people work better if they set up some form of structure to their process. They cannot work with the idea of brainstorming or simply coming up with ideas. Instead, they have a structure such as writing the pros and cons of their situation, writing about their current methods, writing about alternative methods, and changing the external parameters of their situation. For example, you could consider changes in the external parameters such as if the market dropped and your investment lost money. You may then come up with an idea that you use as a counter measure for if the market turns against you. 5. Make the mundane your game They say you should take pleasure in the mundane, but it is easier if you make it a game. When you are coming up with new ideas, you should make that a game too. Even if it is a simple and silly game such as writing as many bullet pointed ideas in 2 minutes and then trying to beat that score. It is often a good idea to apply different unrelated ideation techniques to your process, simply to see if it will work or make a difference.
