Some Recognition I Guess Were Doing Alright

Some Recognition I Guess Were Doing Alright I was honored to make the top 11 (not the top 10) in the Top HR Digital Influencers 2009 list. The list of bloggers here is really fantastic, and its flattering to be on here.  This list is based on certain levels of traffic and links and stuff like that (quantifiable stuff), not necessarily quality of content or even whether they are active bloggers anymore (Joel Cheesman is ranked at #3 but discontinued his usually-number-one blog back in September). Its really cool to see relatively-newcomer Mark Stelzner on this list, and its even more cool to see hes at #1.  Mark has done a fantastic job as the founder (cofounder?) of Job Angels. Launce Haun has always been awesome  and well-respected, as have Jessica Lee (met her in person!) and  Kris Dunn. Im surprised to have gotten a better ranking than Laurie Ruettimann (what a punk she is!) and Jason Davis, as both of them have been a big part of RecruitingBlogs.com, which is one of the best-run Ning sites Ive ever seen. Its an honor to rank higher than Bill Vick, recruiting genius, and Peter Clayton, the mastermind behind Total Picture Radio, even though I think they are way better than I am. There are a few names I dont recognize, but Ill get familiar with them in a bit. If you are interested in jobs, job creation, employment, recruiting, the job search and hiring issues, theres a great list of blogs to follow. I do wonder (so does Laurie R.) why some other terrific advisors are not on this list I mentioned the writers at Career Hub recently, and I never see Nick Crocodilos (brilliant information) on any of these lists, although he should be.  And it will be interesting to see my competition and other job seeker software vendors get on these lists next year (hopefully), as many of the resume writers and career coaches who have started blogging in the last year or two.  Oi vey, where are the outplacement firm blogs? Thanks HR Examiner, for the recognition and work! Some Recognition I Guess Were Doing Alright I was honored to make the top 11 (not the top 10) in the Top HR Digital Influencers 2009 list. How to Say You Have Good Writing Skills on Resume

How to Say You Have Good Writing Skills on ResumeHow to say you have good writing skills on resume is easier if you can relate. Many people write poetry in their personal life and writing resumes that way would be quite silly. However, you should use a few of your own words, and the way you show it all should sound natural. The first tip for how to say you have good writing skills on resume is to avoid coming across as too formal. You don't want to come across as too smart for this job. Using the language of professionals is a good way to start. Use the terms of business like 'M'C' or even an apostrophe to indicate the type of position you are applying for.The next tip is to always use the basics of basic grammar. Using the proper word order is important in writing resumes. When it comes to grammar and proper letter writing, this may seem like it's no big deal but the whole point is to be professional. This is true for resumes as well. One good practice for this is to make sure to chec k your grammar before you send it in to the company. If it seems wrong, chances are someone else will find it. The best thing you can do for your resume is to make sure you have it proofread before you send it out.Another tip is to avoid too many resume examples on one page. The more you have, the harder it will be to read them at all. They can also take up a lot of space on the page, and some resumes have a lot of examples on one page. This is another important element to keep in mind when it comes to resumes. A lot of resumes are short and to the point. You don't want to clutter up the page with all sorts of things. If you are still unsure about how to say you have good writing skills on resume, go ahead and test it. Give yourself a simple test. Take a simple sentence and go from there.Even though you may not be an expert at writing, you can still learn from others. You may think you have written it perfectly. Your resume might need a little help, so go ahead and ask someone who has been through it before.

Why Its Important to Inject Your Personality into Your Resume

Why Its Important to Inject Your Personality into Your Resume If there is no ?U? in your res?u?me, then it isn?t fit for purpose. Since computers were invented, the advice regarding resume/CV  writing has been ?keep it simple?, on two or  three sides of A4 on plain paper and no fancy fonts. However, there are an increasing number of digital  formats emerging which allow you to present yourself in new and interesting  ways so times may be slowly changing. Infographics, digital presentations (Slideshare, Prezi), personal websites and videos can all  help you demonstrate your skills and experience in a more visually stimulating  manner which may, in turn, help you stand out from the crowd when applying for  a position. But whatever the format you  choose, whether it a simple piece of paper or a full scale video shoot, the most  important factor is you. If a recruiter or employer doesn?t get a feel for you  as a person whilst reviewing your application, then it isn?t worth the paper or  online platform it is written on. Where?s the evidence? One of the biggest mistakes people make when writing a  resume is not providing any evidence. They make general statements such as ?I?m an  effective communicator,? or ?I increased sales by 25%?, but anyone can state  these things, the most important thing is the proof. A recruiter or a potential  employer want to know how you personally achieved or demonstrated what you are  claiming. How have you exhibited  effective communication skills in previous roles? What strategies did you put  in place to allow you to improve sales by a quarter? Was the sales increase  across the board, or is this something only you achieved within the sales team? Simply cramming your resume with keywords that appear in the  advert or job description isn?t going to impress anyone. If you can?t back up  your statements with hard facts, your case for been a suitable candidate will  be withdrawn due to lack of evidence. Say ?cheese?: The question of whether or not you should put a photograph  on your resume is up there with ?which came first the chicken or the egg?? I know some recruitment consultants who get a  shiver down their spine when they see someone?s mug shot peering back at them  from the page, but with images prevalent within online profiles, emails and  websites, the continuing increase of profile pictures on CVs is inevitable. Recruiters  increasingly want to see who they are dealing with and if a picture isn?t  provided, they will go online and take a look at you anyway. If you are going to add a photograph to a CV, then the same  rules apply as with LinkedIn. Make sure it is a straight forward, colour headshot. Soft focus arty shots, action  shots or a picture of your favourite pet are unlikely to gain you any favours  with a potential employee. And make sure your picture is the same across all  your platforms (i.e. CV, website, email, Twitter, LinkedIn etc), as image consistency will help to strengthen your personal brand. Spare time? In today?s competitive 24 hour, 7 days a week environment,  in some circles it may be seen as a negative to actually admit to having any spare  time, but for companies who care about their employees a certain amount of  downtime is acceptable. But again, there is always the question of should you  include your outside interests on your CV? This question becomes more pertinent  the more senior and experienced you get as it seems increasingly less relevant in  the grand scheme of things and there is less need to include your interests and  hobbies to simply bulk up your resume/CV. However, there is also an increasing importance towards  company culture. Skills and experience are not the only factors that are taken  into consideration when applying for a role. It is important to demonstrate  your personality, as employers are more likely to take on like-minded people and  interests and hobbies play apart in this. But there is a balance. If your  resume consists of a paragraph or two of your relevant information and then 2  pages of your achievements as a singer in a local rock band, it is going to be  obvious where your passion lies. Which platform?  If you are considering using a more modern way of presenting  yourself such as video or Slideshare then take into  account the type of company you are applying to. If it is within the creative  industry, then they will probably appreciate a more imaginative approach, whereas an accountancy firm is likely to be more traditional. A company website should give you some  indication of whether a company is more conventional or embrace modern digital  media.  If you are unsure then provide both a standard CV and the new format. This  will give the recruiter/employer the option of reviewing your skills and  experience in the format they feel most comfortable with. Pick up the phone.  One thing that is even more effective than trying to display  your personality through your resume or CV, is by demonstrating it in real life.  By ringing the recruiter or employer and speaking to them directly, it will not  only give you the opportunity to show the real you, but it will also make you  more memorable in the process than a video or a bit of paper and allows you to  demonstrate that you have initiative. Once it?s time to short-list for  interview your name will already stick out, which will increase your chances significantly  of going through. How to Get New Ideas When You are Feeling Stuck - Classy Career Girl

How to Get New Ideas When You are Feeling Stuck Not being able to come up with fresh  new ideas is a terrible experience, especially when you have a deadline and you know time is a factor. Your problem may be as simple as not getting enough sleep, or it may be something a little more serious like you have just burned out. Its time to get out from being stuck and learn a few little things you can do start being more creative and innovative in your work and life. How to Get New Ideas  When  You are Feeling Stuck 1. Get out of thinking loops Are you stuck in a form of thinking loop?  The best example of a thinking loop is when you lose your keys. You will keep returning to the place where you “think” they are, even though you have checked already. Many people return more than twice to the same spot because they are sure that is where they left their keys. A thinking loop is very similar. It is where you keep buzzing the same ideas around your mind to the point where you cannot think of new ideas. Getting yourself out of this cycle involves analyzing the reasons why your current ideas will not work, and then concentrating your future ideas on fixing the reasons why your current ideas will not work. This will help guide you out of your loop. The other option is to take your mind off the subject and try again later. 2. Take vegetarian omega 3 pills This tip is not a joke or an urban legend. For some reason, a person that is suffering with repetitive writer’s block or idea’s block should start taking one vegetarian omega 3 pill with their evening tea. Just one per day is fine, and it has to be the vegetarian kind. You shouldn’t take them at the same time as any other medication because they stop it from working. For some reason (there are probably plenty of scientific ones), you will be able to come up with more ideas very easily after about a week of taking the pills. Just try it before you complain that it “cannot” help. 3. Be negative (no, really!) Many people get stuck trying to think of ways to improve something. They hit a wall and do not know where to turn. One option is to take a form of negative bias. Instead of thinking of ways you may make something better, think of ways you could make it worse, and then consider how you would stop things getting worse. As you think up new ways to stop your “thing” from getting worse, you often find ways of making it better (which was your original intention). 4. Set up a structure for your creative  process Some people work better if they set up some form of structure to their process. They cannot work with the idea of brainstorming or simply coming up with ideas. Instead, they have a structure such as writing the pros and cons of their situation, writing about their current methods, writing about alternative methods, and changing the external parameters of their situation. For example, you could consider changes in the external parameters such as if the market dropped and your investment lost money. You may then come up with an idea that you use as a counter measure for if the market turns against you. 5. Make the mundane your game They say you should take pleasure in the mundane, but it is easier if you make it a game. When you are coming up with new ideas, you should make that a game too. Even if it is a simple and silly game such as writing as many bullet pointed ideas in 2 minutes and then trying to beat that score. It is often a good idea to apply different unrelated ideation techniques to your process, simply to see if it will work or make a difference.

How to Stay Awake at Work A Guide for Busy Professionals - CareerMetis.com

How to Stay Awake at Work A Guide for Busy Professionals Source: Pexels.comIf you’re facing down a hectic schedule, yet you’re struggling to stay awake in the middle of the workday due to tiredness, boredom, lack of sleep or energy, then you’re not alone. Feeling sleepy at work is common, but it can seriously affect your productivity especially if you’re chasing a critical deadline. Not only can it be embarrassing to be caught sleeping in the middle of an important meeting but for some industries, sleeping on the job can even be downright dangerous. The obvious choice is to load up on caffeine but if you are not keen on having too many cups of coffee and are looking for an alternative solution then follow this guide to help you stay alert and focused whenever you’re struggling to keep your eyes open.1. Power Up with Healthy SnacksevalOne common cause of feeling sluggish at work is low energy levels. A quick fix is grabbing yourself a snack to give you a burst of energy.evalIt’s tempting to eat any snack you can find, but eating something with lots of sugar like junk food or sugar-sweetened beverages will only be a temporary solution. They can even cause you to crash and feel sleepier when the energy spike settles down.Instead, pack some healthy snacks like some roasted nuts, honey flavored granola or whole grain crisps too much on. Or if your workplace has healthy vending machines, make sure to take advantage of them! These healthy snacks help keep your blood sugar steady all day long.If you have a long afternoon ahead, avoid a heavy lunch. Making it a habit to snack every two to three hours can prevent you from overindulging during your midday meal.According to the dietetic department of the Medical University of South Carolina in the US, overeating is one of the most common causes of induced sleepiness. This is because after eating excessive meals, your body routes more blood to your digestive system which causes a temporary deprivation of blood and nutrients in your brain â€" thus, resulting in residual grogginess.2. Play Upbeat Music If you need anenergy and emotional boost, play some upbeat music. Studies have shown that listening to music activates your brain to release dopamine â€" a “feel-good” neurotransmitter that can biologically cause emotions such as happiness, excitement, and joy. This gives you a natural high to keep the sleepy feelings away.Put on your headphones and play your favorite pop, hip-hop or dance tunes to get you energized. A Beyoncé or a Shakira dance playlist will surely keep you alert and singing along, but if you need something stronger, timeless Eminem tunes should do the trick.3. Keep Your Workspace Clean and OrganizedAnother factor that can be causing your feelings of tiredness and fatigue is the clutter on your desk space. Scientific research has proven that mess does indeed cause stress. A chaotic desk environment can cause you to feel more anxious and frustrated as it signals that there is more to do.evalIf you’re feeling drained, take a fe w minutes to arrange your desk by eliminating the clutter. Make sure you organize all your files, and there are no random supplies are lying around.Throw out that half-eaten candy bar or those 5-year old sticky notes. The activity will not only get your desk cleaned up, but it will also help you focus on a different action that keeps your brain and body active.Once your desk is tidy, this will help you feel more motivated to start your work again.4. Move Around the OfficeIf you’re seconds away from snoozing in front of your laptop, get up and get moving. With an adjustable desk, you can switch to a standing position. If you don’t have one, you can take a walk around the office to wake up your sleeping legs. A change of ambiance will help you break the monotony.evalIf you need to speak to a colleague, skip using the office phone and walk over to have a face to face conversation. And if you have to make an urgent call, try going to the office terrace or rooftop to get some fresh a ir in the process. If moving around is not a possibility, do some simple stretch exercises to keep your blood flowing.eval5. Splash Cold Water on Your FaceA splash of frigid water on your face can give you an adrenaline jolt. This startling sensation is a handy way to wake you up. This is also a quick and easy fix that can also leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated.Avoid lukewarm water though as this may relax you more and make you sleepier.6. Chew GumWhat if you’re inside an incredibly dull meeting and the low lighting plus the glare of the projector is making you want to snooze off? Getting up to get a snack or suddenly doing an arm stretch may not always be the most professional thing to do.In this case, one great suggestion is to chew gum discreetly.A British study has found that chewing gum can combat daytime sleepiness. Chewing gum has also been found to stimulate facial muscles which helps increase blood flow to the head.7. Breathe In Energising ScentsAnother great tec hnique is breathing in energizing scents. These are usually sharp and robust scents such as peppermint to boost energy, eucalyptus to increase oxygen, and cedar wood to activate your mind.Other scents include lemon, citrus, menthol, and rosemary. Smelling these can help wake up your senses to feel more alert.evalRub essential oils on your wrist and temples, or keep a small vial of perfume and spray whenever you’re feeling low.For some people, the smell of brewing coffee is an instant stimulant signaling their brain to wake up. If you’re one of these people, brew a cup of coffee without necessarily drinking it as this might be what you need to power through the day.Staying Snooze FreeFighting drowsiness at work can be a real challenge, however, applying these simple suggestions can help in keeping you more engaged and focused. For a long-term fix, practicing good sleeping habits, a healthy diet, and regular exercise are still the best solutions to keep your energy levels balanced throughout the workday.

Tweet This 1. Polish Your Resume Your resume is what represents you before your hirers or employer, and is often what guides these parties to a hiring decision. Therefore, ensure that it offers the best representation of you. A stellar resume with worthy content will, therefore, give you a significant edge. As such, ensure that it does not have trivial mistakes such as grammatical or spelling errors as these will diminish your attractiveness. Also, make sure that it is formatted appropriately to give the hirer an easier time reading through your achievements. Remember, they are likely going through dozens of other resumes and are, therefore, not going to jump through hoops to read through every detail; make it easier for them. As such, ensure that you do not use up more than three pages listing your skills and accomplishments. Also, make sure that your resume is specifically tailored for the position you are looking for. source 2. Network Extensively Networking, whether social or professional, is bound to bring you results. Thus, if you are looking to enhance your chances of landing a job, ensure that you are trying to connect with a lot of influential people through online and offline platforms. As such, you will have to make a point of attending social and community events to get to meet and know new people. Also, try and raise your activity level in popular social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. However, if you are looking for professional networking exclusively, be sure to utilize LinkedIn as much as you can. 3. Prepare Thoroughly for Interviews If you have been doing everything right so far and you happen to land an interview, ensure that you are prepared for it as it is your only chance to convince hirers that you are the best fit for the position. As such, you will have to research the organization so you can understand their breadth and perspective. You will also need to analyze the job description to be sure that your skills and qualifications fit the position advertised. Additionally, you must know how to respond to interview questions. Learn how to give the most appropriate responses so you can become more attractive to your hirers. source 4. Add Value If there is one thing that will definitely set you apart from the rest of the pack, it is bringing something to the table that no one else has. When you are all vying for the same job, chances are that you all have a generic resume that has just been worded differently. So, what is the number one way of adding real value to your resume?
